This is a brand new role in the software engineering function of this leading UK bank during a period of huge investment and growth.

We are looking for a talented Lead Java Software Design Engineer who is committed to software engineering excellence and who is equally comfortable at the code level as well as leading the definition of implementation level architectures or leading design reviews.

In this high-profile role, you will lead a small team of software engineers as well as a third party partner on a major programme to revamp and evolve the bank's internet channel strategy, taking advantage of emerging trends in internet and web technology eg Web 2.0. Working closely with the business in this fast-moving and demanding environment, you will need excellent communication skills as well as third party management and stakeholder management abilities in order to deliver first-class results in a fully collaborative way.

You must have a strong OO background with in-depth design and coding skills in Java, experience of structured techniques and processes, and a passion for open source frameworks eg Struts, Hibernate, Spring.

Any of the following will be an advantage but are NOT essential:

• Databases: DB2 or Oracle
• Application Servers: WebSphere or similar
• Partitioning application logic
• Code re-factoring/re-engineering
• IBM WebSphere Portal Server or IBM WebSphere Process Server
• Keen interest in emerging and future internet/web technologies
